Alcohol Pulls Color From Fabrics

Alcohol Pulls Color

Welcome to the Park Avenue Cleaner's Blog, where we delve into the intricacies of fabric care and maintenance.

In today's post, we're addressing a common but often misunderstood issue: the effect of alcohol on your garments. Alcohol-based products, while useful for many purposes, can unfortunately pull color from fabric, leaving unsightly stains and causing damage to your favorite clothes. Understanding how alcohol interacts with different fabrics can help you take better care of your wardrobe and avoid costly mistakes. Let's explore why this happens and how you can protect your garments from such mishaps.

What Is The Problem?

Mysterious color loss appears on fabrics in areas that came into contact with any solution containing alcohol.

What Does It Look Like?

The areas that came into contact with a substance containing alcohol turn white or almost white. In some cases, the substance containing alcohol will cause the dye to bleed, leaving a darker ring on the outer edge as it dries.

What Caused It?

Many fabric colors are extremely sensitive to even mild solutions of alcohol. At any time after contact with the staining substance, dye bleeding can begin to occur. Some of the more common solutions containing alcohol include:

  • Aftershaves

  • Colognes

  • Perfumes

  • Hair tonic or spray

  • Hand Sanitizers

  • Lotions

  • Skin Astringents

  • Many kinds of Medicine

Of course, alcoholic beverages can cause similar dye fading. This loss of color may not be readily apparent until after cleaning when the actual stain is removed.

Can It Be Prevented?

Only the owner of the garment can prevent this dye damage by not allowing alcohol solutions to contact the fabric. Dye disturbance begins almost immediately after contact with alcohol, so it cannot be prevented or reversed at that point.

Who Is Responsible?

Drycleaners do not use alcohol-based products for any purpose in stain removal or cleaning. This dye loss is not the responsibility of the cleaner, nor is the fabric defective. It is simply a mishap of consumer use, transportation, or storage.

Is There A Remedy?

There is no way to reverse or satisfactorily cover this type of dye fading.
