Also, cleaning solvents, and agitation can cause more severe separation. Age is also a factor in foam laminates, because the foam itself has a limited life cycle and progressively deteriorates over time.

Manufacturers can prevent this type of damage for a reasonable period of time and even repeated cleaning. Only the use of durable construction methods and compatible bonding materials can prevent such objectionable separation, puckering, and general lack of a “smooth” appearance.

Who Is Responsible?

If a garment is damaged and has not exceeded its life expectancy (only 2–3 years for bonded foam), then the manufacturer should be held responsible, since it could not withstand the recommended care instruction or the conditions of normal consumer use. Professional cleaners can neither predict nor prevent this damage from occurring on coats that have such a construction deficiency.
