Fabric Pilling

Welcome to the Park Avenue Cleaner's Blog, where we delve into the intricacies of fabric care and maintenance.

In today's post, we're addressing a common but often misunderstood issue: Fabric pilling refers to the formation of small, fuzzy balls or clusters of fibers on the surface of a fabric. This occurs when loose fibers in the fabric become tangled together, typically as a result of friction or abrasion during wear and washing. Over time, these tangled fibers form small pills, which can make the fabric look worn and less attractive. Let's explore why this happens and how you can protect your garments from such mishaps.

Separation of Bonded Lining

What Is The Problem?

When fabrics are made of yarns that contain short fibers and are loosly twisted the short fibers can break free from the yarn and become entangled during wear or care, forming “pills.”

What Does It Look Like?

A fabric that was once smooth and uniform now appears fuzzy, looks like it is full of lint. The lint is actually small fiber balls or “pills”. Pilling can be localized in areas of abrasion during wear or it can occur all over the garment.

What Caused It?

“Soft” fabrics are usually made from yarns with a rather low twist. The fibers in the yarn can be too short for the twist and break free, fuzzing up easily. Friction and abrasion during wear can result in pilling. This damage can show up on local areas of a garment or it can be over the entire garment. The normal agitation of any acceptable cleaning process can aggravate this yarn defect, making the pilling more apparent after care.

Can It Be Prevented?

The only way to prevent pilling is if the yarns are better constructed using longer filament fibers in a slightly higher twist. The cleaner cannot prevent pilling on fabrics constructed with low twist yarns. Who Is Responsi

Who Is Responsible?

Even during normal wear and use pilling can be unavoidable on many soft fabrics. If pilling occurs on new items, the manufacturer should be held responsible for the fabric’s limited durability to expected conditions of use and care.

Is There A Remedy?

Some fabrics can be improved temporarily, but the procedures are tedious. Soft napped fabric can be steamed and brushed in one direction with a stiff bristle brush to improve smoothness and uniformity of the nap. In harder finished wool or even synthetic fabrics, use of a fabric shaver or a specialized pill-remover tool may be helpful if the areas are not too extensive. Unfortunately, many fabrics will not respond to any restoration process.
