SEPARATION BONDED LININGS

Welcome to the Park Avenue Cleaner's Blog, where we delve into the intricacies of fabric care and maintenance.

In today's post, we're addressing a common but often misunderstood issue: The separation of bonded linings in coats typically occurs when the adhesive material, which fuses the lining to the outer fabric, begins to degrade or fail. This can result from various factors such as prolonged wear, exposure to moisture, or poor-quality bonding materials. Over time, the adhesive loses its effectiveness, leading to detachment of the lining from the coat’s shell, which not only affects the garment’s appearance but also its structural integrity and comfort. Addressing this issue requires careful repair to restore the bond and prevent further deterioration. Let's explore why this happens and how you can protect your garments from such mishaps.

Separation of Bonded Lining

What Is The Problem?

When the bonded foam inner layer separates from the shell fabric during cleaning, a wrinkled or blistered condition results. This is usually seen on synthetic blend spring coats or lightweight winter coats but can be a problem with other fabrics and garment styles.

What Does It Look Like?

Sometimes the coat appears shrunk, but mainly it has a bubbled or blistered appearance

What Caused It?

Manufacturers laminate foam inner liners to the shell fabric by various means during manufacture. Usually, manufacturers use adhesive binders and/or heat treatments. If an isolated mishap occurs during this process or if there are quality control deficiencies in the bonding methods or materials, the fused components can break down and separate quite rapidly in use or storage. Also, cleaning solvents, and agitation can cause more severe separation. Age is also a factor in foam laminates, because the foam itself has a limited life cycle and progressively deteriorates over time.

Can It Be Prevented?

Manufacturers can prevent this type of damage for a reasonable period of time and even repeated cleaning. Only the use of durable construction methods and compatible bonding materials can prevent such objectionable separation, puckering, and general lack of a “smooth” appearance.

Who Is Responsible?

If a garment is damaged and has not exceeded its life expectancy (only 2–3 years for bonded foam), then the manufacturer should be held responsible, since it could not withstand the recommended care instruction or the conditions of normal consumer use. Professional cleaners can neither predict nor prevent this damage from occurring on coats that have such a construction deficiency.

Is There A Remedy?

Once this separation and blistering appears, there is no restoration.
